Ron Z. Goetzel is a prominent figure in the field of health and productivity management, known for his extensive research and contributions to the understanding of workplace health and well-being programs. He is a Senior Scientist and Director of the Institute for Health and Productivity Studies (IHPS) at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health. The mission of the Institute is to bridge the gap between academia, the business community, and the healthcare policy world. He brings academic acumen into policy debates and day-to-day business decisions. Before moving to Johns Hopkins University, Dr. Goetzel was on the faculty at Emory and Cornell Universities. In the private sector, Dr. Goetzel was vice president at MEDSTAT, Thomson Reuters, Truven Health Analytics, and IBM Watson Health.
Dr. Goetzel's career is marked by his dedication to exploring the health and economic impacts of employer-sponsored workplace health and well-being programs. He has authored over 200 peer-reviewed articles and book chapters that examine the health and cost-effectiveness of health promotion interventions and their influence on employee productivity and organizational performance. His research focuses on identifying best practices for designing and implementing effective programs that promote workers’ health and reduce healthcare spending.
Dr. Goetzel is President and CEO of The Health Project which annually awards the C. Everett Koop National Health Awards recognizing organizations with demonstrable achievements in improving population health and business outcomes. He also oversees the Carolyn C. Mattingly Mental Health in the Workplace Award.
Dr. Goetzel holds a Ph.D. in Applied Social Psychology from New York University and a B.A. from the City College of New York. He is frequently sought after as a speaker and consultant, advising businesses, healthcare providers, and government agencies on strategies to enhance health and productivity. He is based in Bethesda, MD.
